Check Before Hiring a Contractor:
- Do your homework before you hire a contactor. Don't hire just anyone whose name you find in the phone book or on the internet. Use this checklist to select a contractor whom you can trust with your most valuable asset... buying or remodeling your home.
- Is the contractor a member of the local building association? Check with them to see if they are a member in good standing.
- Does the contractor have a permanent business location and a good reputation with the local suppliers?
- How long have they been in business? An established business usually means a financially sound business.
- Have you called the local Better Business Bureau? They alert you to any outstanding complaints.
- Does the contractor have proof of worker's compensation and general liability insurance? If not, you may be liable for any construction related accidents on your premises.
- Will the contractor provide you with names of previous customers? Would they hire the same contractor again?
- Have you seen the contractor's work, both completed and in progress? Check before you sign the contract for quality of workmanship. Understand what materials will be used in your home.
- Are you able to communicate easily with the contractor? Remember, you will be in close contact with him or his representative for the duration of the project. Have the contractor define who will be your contact person during the building process.
- Make sure you understand the written contract completely, including how change orders will be handled.
